Plot: Four boys growing up in Hell’s Kitchen play a prank that leads to an old man getting hurt. Sentenced to no less than one year in the Wilkenson Center in upstate New York, the four friends are changed by the beating, humiliation and sexual abuse by the guards sworn to protect them. Baby that hates tummy time?
I have a 4 month old who absolutely hates being on his tummy. I keep trying tummy time so that he can get used to it, and eventually start learning to crawl, but every time, he just cries and hates it so much. Both of my older kids were tummy sleepers and loved being on their tummy, so this is all new to me. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this more enjoyable for him?

Many babies hate tummy time. I would simply limit it. Why put a 4 month old in a position that makes him miserable? He can’t tell you why he’s unhappy, it may even hurt him. So I would really limit it for now.

My 5 month old also has not ever really liked tummy time. I recently started placing a toy in front of her so that when she looks up she has the toy there to capture her interest and encourage her to stay on her tummy longer without screaming.

Get down on the floor and interact with him while he’s on his tummy, offer him toys to reach for and play with.

My little girl doesn’t like it all that much either…I usually just lay on the floor and talk to her the whole time. She still gets a little fussy, but she doesn’t scream. I think a lot of people don’t realize that tummy time would be useless if all babies loved it and would just chill, motionless and totally content on their bellies. The point is to get them moving, kicking their legs and trying to lift themselves with their arms and backs…it’s exercise that they wouldn’t get if they loved being in that position.

Many babies do not like tummy-time, and technically it is not necessary.
If you are heart set on creating some tummy time that will be enjoyable for her, buy a decent carrier, whether a sling, soft-structured, or a wrap. When a baby is in a ergonomically correct baby carrier it counts as tummy time, because they use the same muscles to try to look around while they are in the carrier.

I read somewhere that 45 minutes a day is good and it doesn’t need to be all at once. You can put your baby on his tummy after every diaper change for a couple of minutes. Or lay him on him on his tummy over your thigh (my baby liked that probably more then any other thing) or on a pillow.

I have a 5 month old little girl that hates tummy time. Whenever I put her on her tummy, she will be okay with it for about 2 minutes and then she will start crying at me to pick her up. I would just not have your baby on the floor for too long…

This is completely normal and fine, don’t force him into the position. Some kids just don’t like being on their tummy and actually skip crawling completely and go straight to walking or opt for butt-scooting instead. Nothing to be concerned about.
